Notes

Notable moments in pub history include...

The "Calendar Girls" of the Yorkshire Dales were famous across the world for their story of a group of Rylstone & District Womens Institute members attempting to raise money for Leukaemia Research. Posing for a risqué charity calendar, it touched so many hearts when it was later made into a major film.

Like Herriot, the film Calendar Girls made a star of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales countryside. The ladies themselves lived in and around the village of Cracoe, and many of the photoshoots for the calendar took place at the real-life Devonshire Arms pub. Other prominent locations in the movie included the village of Linton, the Cow and Calf Rocks at Ilkley, and the market town of Skipton, gateway to the Dales.

When you're visiting Cracoe, you may see the village postman who is one of only two people to appear as himself in the film - the other is TV show host Jay Leno! The film starred leading British actresses Helen Mirren and Julie Walters. Says Walters "The Landscape of the Dales" is an important element in the story, although I had been there many years ago, I did not realize how very different it is to the rest of Britain, nor how stunningly rugged or deeply romantic it is."
